Chapter 7

Jack

I rolled onto my back and stared up at the sky for answers. We had crashed, yet there was nothing for us to have hit. My motorcycle wasn’t crushed, just on its side, abandoned. Harp was gone, disappearing into thin air. The hairs on the back of my neck stood. This was magic. Something or someone didn’t want Harp to leave Bean Town, and I knew where to begin my search to get her back—Bean Towers!

I righted my bike and headed back to town. I needed a plan to save Harp, but from what exactly, I wasn’t sure. But in my heart, I knew she was in danger, and something told me this was the answer to the mystery plaguing me since I went into that fairy tale dimension years ago.

The sound of my bike’s engine filled the morning in Bean Town with a loud rumble announcing my arrival. I continued through town to an end that sensible citizens avoided. But I was not sensible, nor would I require regular folks for what I had in mind. Saving Harp would require stealth and, unfortunately, greed. So I went looking for the Lost Boys, who had both of those qualities in spades.

I pulled up in front of the abandoned building that housed the gang and a few other forgotten members of society. Unsurprisingly, the place was quiet, but whoever Tommy had posted to guard the entry was watching me.

Dilapidated and murky, this was where the shadows hid during the day while the rest of the city went about their business. There was no point in trying to be sneaky, as I was sure my presence had been announced already.

Entering through the broken gates that screamed keep out, I headed for the main entrance which had once contained tall-windowed doors that had since shattered. I had no doubt that the doors would have been ripped off their frames and used for firewood, but the building was made of sturdy stuff and the doors had managed to stay attached to the structure.

Inside, the place was dank, dark, and things scurried about, small shadows reflecting off broken panes in the early light. It was a trigger in a way, a memory of the shitty condo I’d grown up in. Creatures scratching in the walls, sometimes so loud you thought whatever was on the other side would burst through. Thankfully, they never did, but tiny night creatures had been just one worry back then. Much larger predators existed, and right outside my door. Staying safe and surviving had been my number one priority.

“What do you want, Jack?”

The small rat-faced man, appropriately named Ratface, slinked out of the dark and stood before me. If Tommy thought this guy was a barrier to what I wanted, he was sorely mistaken. “I’ve come to talk.”

Ratface lifted his nose as if smelling for my intentions. I allowed him to scan me while I pondered, and not for the first time if he’d been a rat in his last life.
